Magazine front cover - Learner response

1) Add your finished magazine cover as a JPEG image.

2) Type up your feedback from your teacher. If you've received this by email, you can copy and paste it across - WWW and EBI. You don't need to include a mark or grade if you don't want to.

Estimated A Level coursework grade: C+

WWW: This is a good cover without quite reaching the top levels of the coursework mark scheme. Your evaluation is strong – I would agree with your criticisms which is a very good sign for coursework next year. You have used the Vogue brand identity perfectly and the colour scheme fits with the image really nicely – that’s a professional touch. The costume in the image seems appropriate for the magazine although I agree with your evaluation in terms of the camera shot used.

EBI: The image not directly addressing the audience is an issue – most print products benefit from the direct address of eye contact with the target audience. I think the background is interesting here but probably too busy for a fashion magazine cover – it distracts from the cover model. The image is also a little blurred in places which suggests it was taken while the model was moving – not what you’d want for a cover photo. The cover lines do read like Vogue fashion features but you’ve repeated the word ‘statement’ in the two cover lines which you’d want to avoid in a professional magazine cover. Lots to learn here but also lots of potential for next year.

3) Consider your mark against the mark scheme above. What are the strengths of your production based on the the mark scheme? Think about magazine cover conventions and the media language techniques you have used to communicate with your audience (e.g. mise-en-scene, camera shot etc.) Notice the focus on narrative in the mark scheme for Media language.

The mise-en-scene matches the vogue magazine style

4) Look at the mark scheme again. What can you do to move your mark higher and, if required, move up a level?

Change the cover lines (don't repeat words) and use a picture that is more zoomed in with direct address

5) What would be one piece of advice you would give a student about to start the same magazine cover project you have just completed?

Make sure the picture addresses the audience more
