Baseline assessment learner response

 1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

WWW: pretty strong Q2 - lots of depth + detail of effective media effects theories in relation to War of the Worlds CSP
EBI: Your Q3 is very good but more detail needed about the industry behind both GQ + Gentlewoman and how important this is in relation to print vs digital sales. Also more refer3ence to the CSP pages we have studied

2) Focusing on the BBC Newsbeat question, write three ways it helps to fulfil the BBC's mission statement that you didn't include in your original assessment answer. Use the mark scheme for ideas.

  • It informs listeners about the news and it offers a range of different types of news to target all audiences
  • It offers educational content through some of the stories selected to go on their news bulletin and even have expert opinions from
  • The news topics in the bulletin can offer entertainment to listeners by containing lots of soft news like sports content or covering award shows

3) Question two asked you how useful media effects theories are in understanding the audience response to War of the Worlds. Complete the following:
  • Gerbner's Cultivation theory: useful or not useful? Why?
It suggests that heavy listening over a long period of time of negative media can lead to mean world syndrome. It helps to reinforce the audiences reaction to the War of the Worlds broadcast because the audience was already hearings lot of negative news about the upcoming war and they were constantly scared of being attacked so they were more likely to believe the broadcast about the alien attack and believe that something so insane was possible.
  • Frankfurt School's Hypodermic Needle model: useful or not useful? Why?
It suggests that audiences are empty vessels in which information can be injected into. This is too simplistic because audiences wont just believe everything they hear or see, instead I think that the two step flow model explains the audiences reaction in a better way considering the broadcast came from a news outlet they trusted and from a broadcaster that they knew.
  • Stuart Hall's Reception theory: useful or not useful? Why?
I think that the preferred reading was that the broadcast would cause widespread panic however the oppositional reading is that some part of the audience will have rejected this and would have clearly been able to tell that this was not real. The reaction that everyone was panicking may have been because the newspaper industry exaggerated the panic caused because they wanted to reduce their competition.

4) Write a full essay plan for the 25-mark Magazines question. The mark scheme contains plenty of ideas you can use here. Your plan should include notes/bullet points addressing the following:
  • Introduction: one sentence answering the original question and laying out your argument clearly.
Both GQ and the Gentlewoman have been very successful in attracting their target audiences
  • Paragraph 1 content/ideas: Talk about audience in GQ
What is their demographic - age, race and how much their earn
Uses and gratifications
psychographics
hesmondhalgh - risky business
  • Paragraph 2 content/ideas: Talk about audience in The Gentlewomen
What is their demographic - age, race and how much their earn
Uses and gratifications
psychographics
hesmondhalgh - risky business
  • Paragraph 3 content/ideas: Talk about industries in GQ
Will Welch and New masculinity
Conde Nast
Diversification
GQ heroes summit
Monthly release
  • Paragraph 4 content/ideas: Talk about industries in The Gentlewoman
Penny Martin - depict women doing stuff
Independent Dutch publishers - Jop Van Bennekom and Gert Jonkers
twice a year
events
The Gentlewoman club
  • Conclusion: sum up your argument a final time in one sentence
Overall I think that despite the fall in print sales for magazines, digital media allows them to connect with their audiences on a deeper level and allows them to constantly evolve with its audience.

5) Finally, identify three key skills/topics you want to work on in A Level Media this year before the final exams in the summer.

Revise the specific examples from the magazines and CSP pages
Difference between Inform and educate
Go over stuff about the publishers of both magazines
